New Life, New Blog

I have spent eight years loving teenfashionista and enjoying every minute of it. I wrote about my life through high school and college, and looking back is sort of like flipping through a diary (that just so happens to have a lot of fashion). I wrote about going to my first fashion week, about landing my first internship, about writing my first book, and about all five hundred pairs of ballet flats that I've obsessed about over the years.

Now that I'm 23 and living the life I spent so many years dreaming about, I feel like I've reached a new chapter.

I'm still fascinated with teen culture, and I will probably subscribe to Teen Vogue until I can just pass the subscription on to my daughter, but my interests include so many things that don't really fit here anymore (like skipping dinner for dessert and drinks to stick to my budget, or going on a self-imposed clothing ban that excludes shoes, or decorating my apartment with knobs that I found in the bargain bin of Anthro).

So I'm going to be writing about my life and my loves and my city adventures over here from now on, mostly for myself but also for my family and my friends and anyone else who might be interested.

Comfy Cozy

I only wear heels for very special occasions. My mom admits to wearing wooden-heeled Candies around campus, on the job, and out on the town during her college years and she has since had three foot surgeries; my cute flats will prevent me from any cutting and sewing on my tootsies.

Unfortunately, last night was one of those nights that requires me to bite my tongue and wear heels. Believe me, I would have pushed it and donned my patent black flats (they're "formal," right?) but the hem of my dress demanded heels and I had a perfect pair.

Fast forward eight hours: I have officially proved that the old adage "pain is fashion" is true. I have two lovely purple bruises on the top of my feet. At least purple is a stylish shade for spring. It looks like a might be forced to slip my feet in uggs and never take them off, but what I really want to do is treat myself - for medical reasons, of course - to these luxe slippers.

Therapy Departure

After a long day of studying for a test, I logged on to blogger to write a little piece about... well, to be honest, I can't even remember now. Because that was three days ago. So picture this: I was stressed out, brewed the perfect pot of Cinnabon coffee, hopped up on my bed, and decided to decompress in the very best way: fashion blogging. Instead, I was greeted by a message from the lovely people at Blogger that said something along the lines of "you can no longer post because we think you have a spam blog." Since when is pouring your heart out about your deep felt, somewhat shameful weaknesses (visiting Shopbop.com when I should be studying for my exams can definitely be classified as shameful) be considered spam?

This madness continued for an agonizing 48 hours. My blogging obsession was momentarily replaced with a rather unfortunate Saks.com habit, but ~~I am~~ my wallet is relieved to find that blogger has taken me back. Phew.

Here are a few of the things I know think I "need" thanks to blogger:

Is it wrong that I would rather buy these adorable tropical Delman flats than go on a college-tastic tropical spring break? I'll take flashy flats before flashing on MTV any day.

I used to count down the days until Easter Sunday because that meant a new dress with matching patent leather shoes and lace-trimmed socks. And a little purse, if I was lucky. This pretty eyelet mini dress is the big girl's equivalent to that. Perhaps the Easter Bunny will deliver it to me...

I'm addicted to pretty posts. These are sweet, but the shimmery diamonds add a nice dose of bling. The flowers are very appropriate for spring, even if flurries are in the forecast tomorrow. Apparently the weather goddesses haven't realized that it's March...

My Turn To Be Joan... and Melissa

Reminds me of a crisp borrowed-from-the-boyfriend buttondown. Love the ultra-glitzy accessories with the stark white Valentino canvas.

Feminine, sleek, and Chanel. What could be better? Rinko wore the token black dress at the Oscars... and she wore it well.

I am a believer that you should never mix navy with black, but this Proenza Schouler dress is my one and only exception to the rule. The shimmery, fluffy hem is too gorgeous to take.

I love all things sweet and youthful, and the over-the-top, supersized bows on this Valentino dress are just quirky enough to add girlish charm to a black and white palatte.

I would never under any circumstances consider myself a "J.Lo" fan (note the quotation marks), but I adore this old-Hollywood Marchesa frock.

As for my favorite dress of the night - and my new red carpet favorite - Reese Witherspoon in a delicious Nina Ricci takes the cake.

Gold Mine Gutted

Why settle for plain suede Minnetonka moccasins when you can wear glamorous golden buttery leather mocs designed by our beloved Marc Jacobs?

These pretty little things ($295 at Shopbop) remind me of a glammed up version of comfortable house slippers. They would be the perfect remedy for an evening in the dorm spent cramming for exams, working on homework, and sipping double-shot lattes.

Symptoms: stressed, anxious, exhausted, overworked, and generally sick of school.

Directions: Slip these golden babies on your feet and voila! Instant glitz, no matter how un-glam your schedule is.

Side effects: Sudden urge for e-retail therapy. Temptation splurge to splurge on other college-friendly necessities like stylish sweats, chic hoodies, and pretty cocktail rings (they make typing and writing so much more enjoyable because you can watch your gemstones shimmer while you work)

Once you stock up on all of the Proenza goods at Target, click on over to Old Navy. Usually a hit and miss stop, Old Navy's new collection has dozens of pieces that looked like they stepped right off the Trovata runway.

I spied thick cableknit, oversized wooden buttons, short sleeve cardigans, rope drawstrings, itty-bitty stripes... all things inspired by the washed up sailor vibe of sundrenched Trovata.

Your Look, in the Form of a Glossy

In Style is a rare gem: it manages to combine the high fashion of Vogue, the shopping savvy of Lucky, and the celebrity chatter of People all into one lengthy glossy. Another reason I'm particularly partial to the magazine is that my very first adventures in fashion magazineland were none other than In Style. From there, my obsession took flight and I have never looked back since!

My love affair with all things In Style will soon spin into a full blown obsession. Yesterday the publisher announced the launch of "Your Look," a little sister mag aimed at designer-obsessed, fashion-loving, shopping-addictd girls (i.e. you and me). One might argue that the last thing I need is another magazine to add to the ever-growing stack of monthly "must reads," but to that I say... every girl needs a bedtime story, and mine happens to be found within the pages of fashion magazines.

In Style's Your Look stats:

• Launches March 2, mark your calendar! It's a Friday night, so you should probably avoid making plans and instead spend the evening acquainting yourself with your new friend.
• Plans to send the first four issues to existing 16- to 20-year-old subscribers of In Style and former subscribers to Teen People
• Will distribute 425,000 copies on newsstands at a cover price of $3.49.
• Rumor has it that the magazine "will invite readers to upload their own fashion photos on the magazine's Web site or MySpace profile for possible inclusion in the magazine. Readers also will be encouraged to share their own photos and videos on Your Look's Web site."

I wonder if it's unhealthy that I have already created a countdown to the release of "Your Look"...

Soda, Shampoo, and... Designer Dresses?

The very day that Proenza Schouler's line hit Target, I fled to the store the very first chance I got. Unfortunately, I was short on time and after a few moments looking around the designer goods, I wasn't even tempted to try anything on. So, disappointed and lacking retail therapy, I reluctantly left.

The thought of giving Proenza for Target a second glance didn't even cross my mind until I needed a last minute cocktail dress for a student-produced fashion show last week. In a fit of panic, I raced to Target and, within minutes, had six dresses to try on. Because I'm unusually picky about the fit of my clothes, I knew I would be lucky if one of six was purchase-worthy.

You can imagine my surprise when I found I loved half of the dresses I tried. Target was a complete goldmine! There are tons of great sweaters, skirts, and casual dresses that I didn't have time to try on, but I cannot wait for my next bullseye adventure.

This tuxedo shirtdress is a million times more adorable in person. It's feminine, sheer, and incredibly versatile. Wear it as a mini dress or a tunic, dress it up or dress it down, cinch the sash or replace with a cummerbund belt (so appropriate for the tux vibe).

I fell madly in love with this purple print satin frock. The fit was perfection... with one glaring flaw. The bust had a serious "pancake" effect; from the side, I looked like a nine year old girl. Not quite the image I'm shooting for at age nineteen. I had to pass it up, but my heart breaks a little bit every time I see this fabby dress ~~with~~ on another lucky lady.

Most dresses look gorgeous on the model, then lose the glamour when I throw them on. For once in my life, this Proenza babydoll dress is the complete opposite. It looks rather dowdy on the model, but is sweet and stylish in person. The V-neck appears much deeper on me, and the hem hits at a flattering mid-calf length.

This is the dress I ended up wearing to the fashion show and honestly I lost count of the compliments I received on it. I didn't want to take it off at the end up the night and I have the urge to wear it to class everyday. Luckily, I have managed to restrain myself. So far...

Mags Get Bloggy!

I have a test, a paper, and a project... so why am I blogging?

I know, I know, but a girl needs a study break (or five). My first wave of tests couldn't have come at a better time - or worse, depending on which way you look at it. My exams have coincidentally taken place during the fashion week frenzy, leaving me with plenty of wonderful study diversions.

My latest procrastinator of choice has been magazine editor's blogs. The magazine stack that's ten issues deep on my desk clearly isn't enough magazine-ness for me, so I have to resort to an internet fix as well. I adore these blogs, because they give my an insider peek at my celebrity of choice - fashion editors!

So if you have a paper write, an exam to study for, or a homework assignment to complete, reward yourself with some fashion-tastic study breaks every forty-five (okay, fifteen) minutes or so.

Charmed, I'm Sure

I have previously professed my love for charm bracelets, but I am seriously lacking the patience to collect charms from here and there to create my own unique bracelet. I would buy the bracelet chain, find one charm that I love, then bury it at the bottom of my jewelry box until I find it years down the road and realize that I had once had intentions of being a charm collector. And if I did find the patience within to go through the the charm-collecting process, the bracelet would no doubt find itself buried at the bottom of my jewelry box because, after a day of wear, I would decide that it's too much of distraction in class.

This necklace (Lisa Goodwin @ ShopIntuition) does the dirty work for me and eliminates the "that girl has the noisiest bracelet ever, I am going to fail my exam and blame her" factor. Available in two lengths and nine equally fabulous themes, this necklace is nearly a steal at $55.

Although all of the charm themes are ridiculously cool, I want the "I Will Survive" themed necklace, not because I consider myself a survivor (at 19, I haven't survived through a whole lot, unless you count my spanish exam that nearly killed me), but because I love the idea of a little inspiration floating around my neck.

Others that are particularly cute include "California Girls" with cupcakes and palm trees, "Fantasy" with mermaids and rainbows, and "How Sweet It Is" with candy kisses and lollipops.

Knit Pick

I have always wanted to know how to knit. I can remember being fascinated by the way my grandmother could carry on a conversation as her fingers quickly whisked heaps of yarn into fabulous creations, yet I never got around to learning. I'm terribly addicted to multitasking, and I feel that knitting would fit well with my lifestyle.

After coming across fashion label Twinkle's Big City Knits book, my desire to knit has turned into a full blown obsession. The idea of creating my own big-buttoned cardigans, Coco Chanel-inspired jackets, and cozy sweater hoodies - and only paying the cost of yarn - is as fabulous as making my own Starbucks-inspired chai lattes in my dorm room (brew a chai tea bag in half milk-half water).

Since I'm not going on a fabulous tropical trip over spring break, maybe I can add "learn to knit" to my list of to do's and spend a week whipping up sweaters, scarves, and socks. Are there any knitters out there with some insight for me? Where to begin?

Fabulous Flurries

We had a gorgeous mini-blizzard tonight and it was just fabulous. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do when it starts warming up, because I have gotten so used to frequent snow storms. Every single time I see a snow flake, I feel this great spark of excitement that lasts until the last flake falls. Then once the snow lets up, I frequently peek out the window just to see if, by chance, it starts up again (it never does).

This sweater is like a winter weather snow storm wrapped up into clothing form. When mentally creating outfits around this cardigan in my mind, I feel nearly the same excitement that snow brings. I can envision it layered over a bright blue snug n' soft thermal, tossed over a pretty long sleeved dress, haphazardly worn over a patterned top, thrown over my flannel pjs with Ugg slippers.

If I can no longer frolick in the snow on a regular basis, at least I could wrap up in this sweater (Cynthia Steffe sweater, $84 @ Girlshop) when I'm craving flurries.

Every day Should Be a Holiday From Real

If Jack's Mannequin ever comes within, oh, 200 miles of you, GO. Seriously. Grab your friends, jump in the car, and make a roadtrip out of it. No excuses, whatsoever. Take our case: the concert was two hours away, a winter storm bombarded us days before, and we both had exams the very next day. Luckily, sanity hit us and we came to the realization that we have a lifetime to sleep and study. The concert was fantastic and thrilling and everything I hoped it would be. I would go see them again. Tonight. Or right this second.

Instead of arriving at 5:30 when the doors were set to open, we decided waiting outside in the 10 degree weather wasn't quite our scene. Coat checks are so passe. Instead, we ditched the opening bands and treated ourselves to a mexi-fiesta dinner with friends, followed by delicious coffee drinks at one of the cutest cafes I have ever seen. We finally made our way to the venue around 7, which was incredibly timely. We didn't have to wait for a second in the sub-zero temperatures, we got a parking spot literally 10 steps from the door, and we saw 20 minutes of the opening bands (which, let me tell you, was plenty).

Because it was Valentine's Day and we were feeling rather bold, we elbowed our way through the punk rock-poser high schoolers in "the pit" and finally pushed our way to the front, leaving us approx. 7 feet from the luscious - ahem, lusciously married - Andrew McMahon. The performance was just incredible from start to finish. I almost fell into depression when they left the stage without playing my favorite song in the world - the cd's hidden track called "MFEO Part II: You Can Breathe." But then the boys fled back onstage - Coronas-with-limes in hand - and made my wildest Valentine's dreams come true.

Although it was too dark to properly see the concert-goers' outfits, I made one clear observation: if I had half a dollar for every black leggings + Vans + heart-shaped plastic earrings (oh, how clever those are... right...) ensemble I spotted, I would have a years worth of Starbucks lattes.

And on a musical note, let your iPod be as emo as your tunes with "emotibud earbud set" from Pixelgirlshop. Cute!

There is only one day in the entire year that I would wish I had a boyfriend and that's on Valentine's Day. And it's not because I want someone to send me roses. I don't really care for roses. And it's not because I would love a box of chocolates. I would honestly rather have a really great mocha latte. The only reason I really wish I had a boyfriend on Valentine's Day is so that I would have someone to dress up for, someone to take me out to a lavish, dressy dinner. Does that really make me insensitive?

Boyfriend or no boyfriend, I have the best Valentine's Day of my life planned for tomorrow. My valentine is Andrew McMahon. Doesn't ring a bell? Drew, as I like to call him, is the lead singer of Jack's Mannequin (and, occasionally, Something Corporate). I have tickets to their concert tomorrow night and I have been blasting tunes like "I'm Ready" and "Holiday From Real" on repeat for hours now. You know, just so I can sing along to every word and all.

If you don't have plans tomorrow, aside from watching relationship-y girls get showered with red roses (Don't they know how cliched flowers are?) and chocolates (I hope they gain ten pounds), head over to their myspace and sing along with Drew and I. I'll tell him you said hi.

Sidenow: There is a chance that the weather will squash my hopes of the! best! v-day! ever! by either 1) preventing me from making the two hour trek or 2) preventing "Jack" & Co from making the three hour trek so keep your fingers crossed for us. I'll send cupid karma your way.

The Third Winter Storm

God bless the weatherman. He's bringing me one more winter storm and, to be honest, I couldn't be more happy about it as snow is one of my top five favorite things in the entire world.

Tonight: A wintry mix this evening will transition to mainly snow, heavy at times, overnight. 3 to 5 inches of snow expected.

Tomorrow: Snow during the morning will transition to snow showers during the afternoon. Snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches.

This is the most winter weather Missouri has received since I can remember and I'm seriously thinking of investing in some fabulously stylish long underwear. What do you think?

Polka Dotty

Today is just one of those "blah" days. It's dreary and gray; the sky is heavy with rain clouds. There is promise of snow later on tonight, but with temperatures nearing 40 degrees, I'll use my weather prowess to predict that we'll have quite a rain storm first. Cold rain... ugh.

I logged on to Gap.com when I was in class and my mood quickly improved as a spotted a few adorable polka dot pieces. I've been a longtime polka dot devotee because they're an instant mood enhancer. Whether I have polka dots on my sweater, on my shoes, or on my undies, I have a smile on my face.

I am absolutely in love with both of these Gap finds. The camisole can be tossed under a cardigan now, then worn alone for spring. And the skirt... so adorable!

Oh, J. Crew, must you always design so many things that I cannot live without? I basically need this skirt and, though I don't know how I would go about wearing the scarf, I want it nonetheless because it's 1) pink, 2) trimmed in anchors, and 3) polka dotted.

I don't do heels... or wedges... or stilettos. I might be able to make an exception for these great peep-toes because they look quite comfortable and ridiculously chic. I will confess: I already own one tan-with-white-dots cardigan, but I feel like I should invest in another. You know, just in case.

My Kid is Trendier Than Your Kid!

You would never look at me and say "oh, she's so great with children" or "she was a natural-born mother." I don't have patience, I don't babysit, and I don't think little kids are "adorable" when they do annoying things like scream and sob and peek under dressing rooms. I do, however, think kids are cute from afar.

There is a daycare on my college campus and, when the weather decides to be kind, you can see the kiddies playing outside and it just might be one of the cutest things in the world. That's kind of how I feel about Child Magazine's fashion show. Somehow, child-size trendy clothes are so much better than regular ol' trendy clothes. Go figure.

Try and tell me cheetah can never be considered "adorable."

Oh, my gosh. If I had a little boy, I would dress him up in this outfit in an instant. Love the little sweater + scarf duo.

What a fabulous wide-skirt red dress. This is a great look, age five or twenty-five.

Fashion Fraud

The day I found out that Trovata was planning on sitting out of this season's Fashion Week, I went to the bookstore for a magazine fix (Nylon Magazine, natch) to cure my fashion-caused depression... the worst variety of depression, if you ask me. I got in line and was stunned when I reached the counter - the checkout guy was a dead-ringer for - in complete seriousness - Trovata's head designer John Whitledge. Ironic, right?

Last night I logged on to WWD for my nightly dose of medine, clicked on to the Fashion Scoop, and instantly fell in love with boy wearing a striped polo layered under a sweater vest layered under a sharp wool cardigan. He was scruffy and intelligent (the glasses made him look smart) and holding a fat persian cat in the sweetest way. A quick Google search led me to believe this fetching guy, interestingly named Nicolae Petrescu, has been making the fashion show rounds with his sister. Claiming they're "Russian socialites" visiting "friends from boarding school," the couple have been sitting in front row of every major show decked out in the most enviable threads accessorized with a cat named Leo.

Quite eccentric, right? Rumors were flowing that the Russian duo were somehow related to Sasha Baron Cohen's fashion reporter alias, but the reality is much more fascinating.

It turns out that when Trovata decided to skimp on the fashion show, Whitledge strategically planted these Trovata-adorned siblings all around the tents as a clever way to raise hype about this season's collection. I always knew there was something about those Trovata boys that I couldn't get enough of, but now I'm head over heels. The only problem is, I don't know whether I'm more in love with Whitledge or Nicolae. Decisions, decisions...

After weeks of wearing uggs, more uggs, and nothing but uggs, I needed... more. My toes craved the cuteness of ballet flats. So one morning last week, I woke up, intentionally did not look at weather.com, and slid my feet into my favorite preppy brown ballet flats. A quarter of the way into the fifteen-minute trek to my morning class, the top of my feet were blue with coldness. Turns out I chose the arguably the coldest day of the year to trade my ugly uggs for adorable flats.

Since then, I have been afraid to wear anything but my cozy booties (without wind chill factored in, today's low is 14°, tomorrow's is 17°, friday's is 15°... you get the picture). My feet... and my wardrobe... are dying for these fabulous shearling Bernardo flats.

I spotted these beauties before Christmas, but somehow forgot to spread the word to Santa. Made of inside-out shearling, these are ridiculously comfortable, cozy, and stylish. Although you can't quite tell from the picture, these are higher-cut than most ballet skimmers so I won't have to risk the freezing feet fiasco again. What more could a Midwest college girl need? Fashion Week: DVF

Isn't she just adorable? I idolize Diane von Furstenberg. I caught her for a split-second on Regis & Kelly (it's my pre-morning class diversion) today and she was fabulous. Kelly wore this downright enviable DVF in the Heart Truth fashion show... it was a bright, cherry red wrap number covered in itty-bitty sequins. If the designer of Dorothy's stylish sparkling red pumps were to create a dress, it would look just like [this].

Ms. von Furstenberg didn't disappoint on the runway, either. She churned out a roster of gorgeous fall pieces: princess-sleeve jackets, trapeze dresses, ruffled skirts, and a plethora of sweater wrap dresses.

The winter-ready sweater dress + the universally chic wrap dress = an autumn must-have!

Instead of packing up your breezy, chiffon dresses when the seasons change, simply toss them over your cozy knit crewneck tees.

I have a serious love for polka dots; they have such a youthful, lighthearted vibe that I can't get enough of... partically when paired with va-va-voom red (heels, jewelry, lips). Trend spy: sixties swing coats.

Survive the Super Bowl

Juli B, a great little lifestyle guide delivered to my inbox daily, saved me from football cluelessness with a Super Bowl Survival Guide. I wish I could let you all in on the great advice, but I couldn't find a link for the life of me, so I'll just have to repost the essentials.

WHO: the indianapolis colts (blue and white) vs the chicago bears (navy and orange)

I like to identify the teams by colors. Much easier to keep up with who is winning.

THE SEASON: this year, the underdog wins. there were turnovers and passion galore. par example, the colts shocked the new england patriots (and the rest of us) when they not only came back from an 18 point deficit (rough start, they were down 21-3), but scored an 80-yard drive late in the fourth quarter. earlier, the bears almost made it look easy with a 39-14 win over the new orleans saints, making them NFC (national football conference) champions.

This means nothing to me, but to those of you who are not football-illiterate, you might understand this rubbish.

THE PLAYERS.
COLTS: two words: peyton manning: #18. older bro of eli (QB of the new york giants). son of archie (former star QB of the new orleans saints). you might say football runs in this tennessee grad's blood. there's been a ton of media and questions about whether he would ever make it to the big game... the reason behind his commercial success? he's actually a genuinely nice, likeable guy. naughty behavior: allegedly dropped his pants in front of a female athletic trainer at UT. surprise!
BEARS: rex "sexy rexy" grossman: #8. QB from university of florida. has had a rollercoaster season with a QB rating of over 100 in seven games (which is a good thing), and a dismal QB rating of under 40 in five games. (not muy bueno.) rex was also known as "rex glassman" and "wrecks grossman" during his injury-prone years.

After a little googling, I came to the conclusion that Sexy Rexy is thismuch cuter than Peyton. And that's if you're into that big, bulking football player type. I personally prefer the lean swimmers build, but that's just me... and an entirely different topic.

THE COMMERCIALS: since brit-brit (a.k.a. "the spread") wasn't given an invite to participate this year (tipsy and pantiless much?), watching k-fed work at a fast food joint in the nationwide insurance ad (pictured left) should be, well, interesting (to put it mildy). want more? expect love from the daddy (go daddy that is), 10 anheuser-busch ads, and lots of nuts. (as in the camelot-meets-emerald kind, perv.)

I admit it: I'm the girl who is watches the super bowl exclusively for the commercials. In fact, I am the girl who counts down the plays because I am so impatient for the commercial breaks.

THE OTHER PART OF THE SHOW: this halftime will last 27 minutes (15 longer than the usual super bowl 12). no pressure here. and who will be entertaining you (hopefully fully clothed) you ask? none other than prince. (maybe he'll even be on time), and the national anthem will come from grammy-award winning billy joel, who returns to south florida to become the first performer to sing the anthem in multiple super bowls.

The other reason I tune into the super bowl: the half time show. This year Prince is the star performer, and, quite frankly, I just want to see the theatrical ensemble he chooses.

My last piece of advice? Just keep your laptop close by with The Daily open and ready for entertainment [and sanity] purposes.

Isn't the bow-front trench divine? It would inspire me to look forward to every chilly fall day.

Rugby striped tee with trouser jeans with denim suspenders... a great take on the overall.

My favorite look for the season... the new twinset: knit mini dress under a long grandpa cardigan.

Tailored toggle coat, the ideal splurge for fall. Note the tights and the collegiate beret... very Love Story-inspired.

Is there anything better than a winter mini skirt? Yes... the winter mini paired with luscious textured tights.

I adore the buttondown + vest duo, especially with the belt - the cherry on top of the stylish sundae.

I am head over heels (though I personally prefer flats) for this slouchy, satin bow-adorned dress in a calmly cool gray shade paired with oversized pearls haphazardly tossed on. I am desperately in need of a fabulous excuse to wear this overwhelmingly chic getup: the Oscars, the Globes, a fancy soiree, breakfast at Tiffanys (this dress is very Audrey, don't you think?). The occasion matters little; all I care about is coming up with a valid reason to drop $368 on a dress.

Well, See... I Need Wellies

Missouri's weather has had a mind of its own lately: below-zero temperatures, spur-of-the-moment snow showers, random patches of ice. I was walking home from class the other day. One minute I was chatting away on my phone, the next I was sprawled out on the cement with my legs out in front of me. It was a miracle that a) I didn't end up with any broken bones or bruises b) not a single soul saw me (to my knowledge, anyway) and c) I continued talking on the phone throughout my wipeout.

Regardless, I am in dire need of weatherproof shoes. Uggs, though I love them, have zero traction and minimal waterproofing. What I need are good, tough wellies... and if they happen to be adorably patterned and brightly colored, well, that just makes things even better. I have an enormous crush on all of Target's wellies, each pair is fantastic in its own way, and at only $20, you can basically buy a different pair for every day of the week.

I have never been one to play in the rain, but with shoes as waterproof and adorable as these, I can honestly see myself looking forward to spring rain showers.

Hey Target (or mom...), if you're reading this, my absolute favorite is the navy floral, though I am quite a fan of polka dots, paisley, and houndstooth as well. Oh, and my shoe size is eight-and-a-half, but nine will do. My dry tootsies will send you a thank you.

Every girl, regardless of age, location or lifestyle, needs a healthy selection of go to T-shirts. I am not a T-shirt girl by any stretch of the imagination, but even I will 'fess up to a few great tees for when life is simply to complicated to wear anything else.

Fashion Week Eve

It is all too much for me. First I come across the amazingly cool interactive map of New York Fashion Week. Next I see not so ugly Betty trotting through the tents at Bryant Park. And then... then... I decided to head over to Coutorture for my daily (okay, more like hourly) fix and guess what. I am greeted by this little welcome:

We're upgrading the site to get ready for Fashion Week. Please check back tomorrow morning.

What they actually mean is, "we're cooler, better, and much more stylish than you because we're going to Fashion Week. Check back often because, while you have nothing better to do with your time than live vicariously through us, we are living it up at Bryant Park with all of our fabulous fashion industry pals.

Ugh. Okay, so that's not really what Coutorture's Julie means... she's the biggest (and most fashionable) sweetheart and would never say something like that. But it is more or less true. The next week is going to be devoted to Style.com, Coutorture, WWD, The Daily, Fashionista, and dozens of other highly addictive fashion week-obsessed sites. If my teacher is reading this, be a dear and avoid assigning homework. If the party-planning frats are reading this, please postpone any parties for a few weeks. And the Super Bowl footballers, if you could just push your little game back... actually, scratch that. I couldn't care less when the Super Bowl is on. But you get the point.

The Dining Hall Experience

Orzo with roasted vegetables, bok choy shrimp stir-fry, roasted vegetable calzone, and chocolate gooey butter cake. No, that's not what I ordered at a delicious vegetarian cuisine restaurant last night; this is a sampling from my dorm's local dining hall. Stop right there. If you find yourself thinking, "Mmmm, college students have it good. These meals sound scrumptious" you would be glaringly wrong.

Though the meals sound tempting, they often taste like... slightly seasoned, heavily garlic-ed salt. In fact, that's a very accurate description: a plateful of garlic and salt. Mmmm, indeed. First semester I existed on a grab bag of peanut butter, bagels, double chocolate chip cookies, fro-yo, and the odd salad. Healthy, yes? This semester I have resorted to dining en casa. Meals consist of yogurt, oatmeal, fruit, Luna bars, and a liberal helping of cereal. Ah, the life of a college student.

I came across a fascinating New York Times article about a Yale student-by-day, personal-chef-by-mealtime that truly inspired me. Using foods found in the dining hall, this sophomore kid whips up chicken satay with peanut butter, tikka masala with yogurt, and banana splits with cornflakes that sound as good as they taste. Perhaps I should whip up a little something of my own with tonight's Italian Chicken, Swiss Steak, Mashed Potatoes, and Steamed Pasta? Nah, I'll just stick with cereal.

Do The Charleston

If I could wriggle my nose and zap myself back into another time, I would choose the roaring '20s without a doubt. Maybe I have read (and seen) The Great Gatsby ten too many times, but doing the swinging charleston in a shimmering flapper dress, mary jane pumps, and a prim cloche hat just sounds so magical.

Since we can't vacation in other decades ... yet... I'll have to settle for these great French Sole ballet flats. Dubbed the "Charleston" because their timeless shape and old-fashioned loafer-inspired fringe, these shoes bring a classic spin to denim and add a ladylike elegance to skinny trousers.

I always look to H&M and Forever 21 for cheap, chic buys, but who knew Delias would be filled with so many great spring must-haves? I happened to click on the website this morning and was pleasantly thrilled. After seeing their fabulous new merch, I am dying to get my hands on a copy of the warm weather catalog...

: pretty and polka-dotted, so much fun with classic red or '80s fuchsia.

the retro shirt dress
: a glamourfied version of the classic button down, perfect for day or night, dressy or casual.

: don't shy away from this silhouette. Though it appears ever so maternity-inspired, the tent fit is impressively flattering, especially paired with a slim pencil skirt or skinny pants.

Didn't You Know Normal is Weird...

I’ve been challenged to share six weird, unique things about myself... let's see, six is a rather tiny number...

1. I am endlessly motivated and ambitious. I have a lengthy list of all the things I want to accomplish in my lifetime; I am such a determined girl, there is no doubt in my mind that I will achieve everything.

2. I am so in love with writing, I could write - about anything - all day long. I tend to write at really inappropriate times: in class, during the middle of Grey's Anatomy, when I should be asleep in bed.

3. The same thing goes for fashion obsession. Fashion websites, fashion magazines, fashion books, fashion shows... anything remotely related to style is of interest to me. Sitting at a bookstore, sipping coffee, reading magazines, hanging out with my boyfriend Macbook: that would be a fantastic way to spend the day.

4. I truly love the taste of coffee and could subsist only on it: black, flavored, lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos... it doesn't matter the style, I could drink it non-stop and never get tired of it. Mmmm.

5. Not a day goes by that I don't daydream about living in New York City. When I'm particularly stressed out or unmotivated, I picture myself walking to work (at a magazine, natch) down the streets of NYC and I'm instantly reenergized.

6. My astrology sign is Cancer. The description of the Cancer rings eerily true of myself:

Cancer is symbolized by the Crab. You're deeply emotional and intuitive, and your top concern is family. Something of a homebody, you prefer to stay in rather than go out on the town. You can be moody, drawing into your protective shell if things get too intense around you.

So true! If I am not careful, I become such a homebody. I adore being around my family. I am very emotional, though I rarely show it. As for moody, well... let my friends answer that one.

Wise, Old Owl

Everywhere I shop, from Anthropologie to Saks to Target, I find owls staring back at me. Owls as dishtowels, owls as stocking holders, owls on clutch purses, owls as earrings. I cannot figure out where such a trend would origin, so I decided to research the appeal of the "wise old owl."

... as a toddler, maybe your favorite animal sound to imitate was the owl's "hoo hoo"
.. as a child, maybe you were jealous of owls because they stayed up all night, while you had to be in bed at 9 on the dot
... while watching Winnie The Pooh, maybe Owl was your favorite character because he was just so friendly and grandfatherly and adorable
... while shopping for a new pendant necklace, maybe you were sick of the enamel apple, bored with hearts, and quite frankly, scared of skulls?

My latest choice homework distraction is Fashionista.com, a delicious website from previous Fashion Week Daily style scribe Faran Krentcil (click on her name for a can't-miss Huffington Post Q&A). If The Daily and Gawker had babies, Fashionista.com would be their "Little Marc" (Marc Jacobs' childrens line) wearing daughter.

There are only a dozen posts thus far, but I have read and re-read each one no less than three times each. Not only is Faran a witty writer, but she has an enviable eye for style. I feel like I've learned so much from the site already. Did you know that Phoebe Philo worked as a ghost designer for The Gap? Neither did I!

Hey Shorty

As I sat in my 10 o'clock class, still bundled up in my coat, scarf, and gloves, and couldn't stop thinking about.... shorts! My legs have been stuck in denim-induced hibernation for far too long; each day, they're growing increasingly impatient for a little vitamin D in the form of sun.

Though I have never been much of a shorts-wearer, always choosing sweet skirts over sporty shorts, I am vowing to give them a whirl this spring. There are two varieties I plan on taking for a spin once the temps heat up: the slightly-baggy, menswear trouser shorts and the ultra-short "tap shorts" (a chic version of the "daisy duke").

The skinny shorts are a match made in heaven for last seasons' tunic tops, while the voluminous trouser shorts call for tailored blazers, little knit cardigans, and understated tanks. My chosen shoes will undoubtedly be ballet flats (you're surprised, aren't you?), but for those who crave height boost, wedges will do.

Johnson isn't as interesting as Behnaz Sarafpour.

I'm Not Forever 21

If H&M and Forever 21 were to duke it out, Celebrity Deathmatch style, who would prevail? The stylish journalists at New York Magazine investigated the issue.

They discovered that H&M had "long, disorganized lines for the fitting rooms and the checkout. Jamming dance music helps lower the frustration level." Forever 21, on the other hand, was "a calmer environment. But scarcity of smaller sizes can necessitate stripping a mannequin." As far as clothing goes, H&M's "current collection favors graphic colors and moddish cuts." Forever 21 "favors cute and colorful designs. Clothes are especially youthful and trendy."

Much to my disappointment, New York Magazine didn't crown a cheap chic winner so I'll take the responsibility on myself and anoint H&M the queen of wallet-friendly style. They have perfect knits (stripes! polka dots!), adorable party dresses, and a healthy dose of accessories that I can't get enough of... except I literally cannot get enough of it, as it is cities away from me. What are your thoughts? H&M or Forever 21... or Zara... or Target Go! International?

There is just no excuse for reaching for a sweatshirt day after day.

Oh, you're cold? Toss on a cardigan.
Oh, you want to be comfortable? Layer on a thermal.
Oh, you had a wild night out and the notion of planning an outfit is to much to ask? Wrap up in a belted sweater.

I must confess that last semester, I found myself reaching for the uninspired college sweatshirt getup more often than I would like to admit. Add this to my list of resolutions: no more! I love these sophisticated jackets available in the coziest fleece, a perfect sweatshirt alternative. They require zero effort, they don't sacrifice comfort, and they're only $40 at Gap. How can you say no to that?

Can you imagine if we had a president who wears pearls and Oscar de la Renta dresses?

...because Hillary Clinton just announced that she will be running for president. Can you imagine how exciting it would might be to have the job as stylist-to-the-first-female-president? I would dress her in little vintage Chanel suits and specatator pumps most days, occasionally tossing in a trendy trouser ensemble (wideleg menswear trousers, a nice little cashmere twinset, and enormous pearl button earrings) here and there. For special evening occasions, I would stick with Oscar, Carolina Herrera, and a trio of trusty young designers - Zac Posen, Behnaz Sarafpour, and Monique Lhuillier.

Hillary, just have your people call my people.

Marc's Mocs

I am elated. One of my favorite people in the entire world, Marc Jacobs, has just announced plans to open a boutique in Chicago. I definitely see a road trip in my near future...

According to WWD:

The company has signed a lease to open a 4,000-square-foot store in the city's eclectic Bucktown neighborhood this summer, making it the first major retailer on a street filled with independent boutiques, trendy restaurants and funky coffee shops.

"I just felt at home," said Robert Duffy, president of Marc Jacobs. "It's just something emotional. I just liked the people I saw. I loved their style. I loved the way they were dressed. "

"All of a sudden you see your customer and you see the person who buys your clothes," he noted.

Speaking of Marc, I'm completely in love with the colorful suede and pony hair moccasins his model's wore at the spring show. I'm begging for a moccasin trend.

I Am Charlotte... Ronson

I professed my love for all things Charlotte Ronson last fall, and much to my delight, it looks as if the spring line will exceed my expectations. Charlotte is a whiz at designing clothes that can be worn day to night, from classes to clubbing.

This little ruffled vest is just the thing to toss over my tees and thermals for class; for night, I would wear it with a simple tank - perhaps a bright, poppy pink - and loads of necklaces. I love the idea of wearing it over a Tshirt mini dress (short sleeve or long, depending on the weather) for an ultra-easy look.

This cotton tank dress's comfort level may rival that of a oversized worn-in Tshirt, but the color, silhouette, and embroidery make it party dress-appropriate. Wear it with metallic flats and a stack of bangles for evening or throw it over your bikini for a spring break coverup.

Wear this dreamy turquoise dress with dark skinny jeans and a cardigan now, wedge heels and a tan in a few months. The empire waist is unbelievably forgiving, and the snap-front neckline allows you to reveal a contrasting tank. Cute!

I wish a had a sailboat... I just love anything nautical-themed and this navy-trimmed white hooded tunic is definitely on my list. Layered over a thin navy thermal and jeans, I could wear this to class. During the summer months, I would try it as a mini mini dress , accessorizing with an anchor necklace and boatshoes.

This drawstring-waist hooded dress is as close to "sporty" as I care to be. Because I adore the look of hoodies under denim jackets, I would grab my favorite faded-just-so jean jacket, slide on bright flats, and head to class. Like A Rolling Stone

I don't know about you, but I am so hooked on MTV's new Miss Seventeen and The Hill-inspired show, "I'm From Rolling Stone." The characters are insanely entertaining (and, in some cases, just plain insane), the guys are gorgeous, the girls are well-dressed. What's not to love?

I just came across a very interesting article in The New York Times. Titled TV Dramas Rip the Cover Off Magazines, it takes a closer look at our society's enormous interest in glossy magazines. From "Ugly Betty" to "How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days," from "Just Shoot Me" (my current syndicated favorite) to Glossed Over (a blog devoted entirely to our magazine love affair - for better and for worse), we just cannot seem to get enough of the lives, the characters, and the happenings of our favorite magazines. From the article:

Editors of the glossies, who once toiled in relative obscurity, have become more visible in recent years, offering relationship advice and beauty tips on morning talk shows. Many are demicelebrities themselves.
And glossy magazines do lend themselves easily to narrative. “You’ve got divalike people in positions of power,” said Andrew Essex, the former editor in chief of Absolute, a magazine for the rarefied users of black American Express cards. “You have hierarchal positions that inevitably produce conflict. You’ve got overeducated and underpaid people who are completely self-aggrandizing, and these people are in the storytelling business, so they know how to form themselves into characters.”

If you liked The Hills, Miss Seventeen, Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty... I'll stop here because I could go on for hours... then you absolutely must give "I'm From Rolling Stone" a chance. Besides, what else do you have to do on Sunday night at nine? Homework?

Tales of a Robber

I was planning a burglary... when and how I would be able sweep in unnoticed and steal my friend's argyle slip-on sneakers. A preppy pattern of navy and sky blue, I could not keep my eyes off of them. We would be hanging out in her room, and my eyes would zero in on that fabulous, comfortable pair of perfection.

Much to my relief, I came across a pair of Keds that are much, much cooler than my friend's. Vans-inspired, these slip-ons are undoubtedly comfortable and pleasingly sassy. At just $29, I could splurge for both the pink-on-red pair and the green-on-navy version. The best part? I don't have to risk felony charges.

**Note: The stealing bit was only for dramatic purposes. I would never steal anything, from anyone. In all honestly, I would have terrible trouble turning in, say, a quilted Chanel bag... but I would do it. I think.

I am extrodinarily fascinated by Andy Warhol, muse Edie Sedgwick, and frequent Factory goers. I am completely excited to see Factory Girl, but for some kooky reason, it has yet to hit local theaters.

To fill that void, I have been spending heaps of time on I Blogged Andy Warhol, which are Andy Warhol’s diary entries from the publication the Andy Warhol Diaries posted exactly 29 years to the day after they were first recorded.

Here's a taste from May 26, 1977:

Went to lunch with Clara Sant of Yves Saint Laurent and Paloma Picasso at Angelina. Clara looked good, thinner, and Paloma, too. Clara’s suffering through the marriage of her boyfriend Thadte Klossowski to Loulou de la Falaise. She first found out by an official notice in Le Figaro placed by Thadte and Loulou. She’s getting her sense of humor back now so she’s getting over it. I said Clara and I should announce our mamage in Le Figaro to outdo them.

Cabbed to train station ($8). Had our own compartment. Fell asleep. Arrived Brussels at 7:00. Mr. LeBruin, the art dealer showing my pictures, greeted us with a couple of hippie boys. Checked into the not-chic Hotel Brussels. We all had duplex suites which was crazy, because whenever the doorbell rang you’d be upstairs in the bathroom and you’d have to rush down the floating staircase to answer it.

Seventeen's New Queen

Not one to laze around, Atoosa Rubenstein has been nonstop since her Seventeen departure. She has been regularly posting on MySpace, as well as establishing her new company Big Momma Productions. The 'Toos is clearly on top of things, but I began to fear for the fate of post-Atoosa Seventeen.

After weeks of anticipation, Hearst finally announced that Ann Shoket would be taking over the throne of Seventeen, one of the few teen magazines left in the print market. I did a little background research on the new editor - what can I say, I'm a self-admitted Googler. Here's what I found:

The last few years of my grandmother's life, she wore nothing but moccasins. Moccasin slippers, moccasin booties, fringed moccasins: she owned a variety of styles and colors and I loved them all. On a rare trip to Urban Outfitters last week (quite a treat, as the closest one is hours away), I noticed the best pair of Minnetonka moc booties, alarmingly similar to the ones my grandma Mamie wore.

Then, much to my excitement, I just spotted Lindsay Lohan making an ice cream run in rustic brown moc boots. First, Urban Outfitters, now Lindsay Lohan? I'm officially on the search for a perfect pair of moc booties a la Lohan.

Did you catch last week's America's Next Top Model marathon? Seven luscious days of nothing but ANTM... I simply could not get enough of the show. I breezed through several seasons, endlessly intrigued by the gossip, drama, and fascinating personal lives of the budding models.

Who knew models were so interesting? Without my daily ANTM fix, I am dying to get my hands on this novel that examines life from a model's POV.

I popped into a charming little boutique in Fort Worth filled to the brim with delicate, affordable jewelry, offbeat books, and an edited collection of bohemian clothes and shoes. It was as if I stepped into my hippie-ish great aunt's attic (if I had a onetime hippie great aunt, of course).

I fell hard for a pair of soft gold leather flats. They looked adorable on, would match all of my favorite necklaces, and came with a price tag that would impress even my dad ($30! Honestly!). I tried to talk myself out of them. I do already have a pair of gold flats... except they are a bronze-gold versus these nice soft gold tone... and the other pair have a bow, whereas these had an elegant shimmery trim. And, well, did I mention they were only thirty dollars? That is the price of six Starbucks Cinnamon Dolce lattes.

As I was heading toward the counter, I noticed the shopgirl's adorable patent leather flats. These were no ordinary flats - they were a gorgeous bright, cobalt blue. I asked her where I could find them, and she told me they were a gift. I begged her to tell me where I could find such a fun, necessary wardrobe addition, and with a giggle, she told me she found them at Payless.

I immediately logged on to the website at the first chance I could find, and sure enough, the patent pretties are there and only $13. Do not fear the alarmingly plastic look of them; I assure you, in person, they are complete Repetto twins.

Madewell... Literally

The second I stepped foot into Madewell, I knew there was no conceivable way I would leave empty handed. After a minute, my quick shopping crush turned into a full blown obsession. Rugby striped sweaters, ruffle trimmed oxfords, bronze moccasin loafers, colorful cords, cable knits, banker-inspired pinestripe vests... everything I know and love was found in this tiny little store. I circled around that little clothes-filled bit of heaven for an hour finally settling on a few fabulous pieces:

• cherry red deep-V sweater
• heather grey thermal grandpa cardigan

Even after I made my purchase, I was still reluctant to leave. You see, there are only two Madewells in exisitance thus far - one in Dallas, another location in L.A. - so I knew it would be quite some time until my return. Fast forward two hours, when I triumphantly returned to Madewell to introduce my argyle-loving cousin to J. Crew's little sister store. She left with two sweaters and I left with an offical new favorite store.

A Shopping Adventure

Quite frankly, I couldn't stay away. I left my laptop at home and I still found myself logging onto teenfashionista.com (and WWD... and The Daily...and, well, I should end this list pronto).

Today brings a trek to the heavenly NorthPark shopping destination in Dallas and I can hardly wait. NorthPark has a shiny new shops like Barneys New York and Intermix, as well as unique gems like Abercrombie's Martin + Osa and J.Crew's Madewell. You can find dreamy stores like Burberry, Michael Kors, and Ralph Lauren right beside college girl budget-approved stops like Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, and one impressive Gap.

I am more of a looker than a splurger... my friends are amused by my impressive ability to talk myself out of anything, no matter how stylish, affordable, or "very me." So expect a lengthy report about my thrilling NorthPark findings - from afar.

A Bittersweet Farewell

Have you heard the terrible news? Our beloved guilty pleasured, The O.C., well...it didn't make it. First Marissa died, then Summer's style took a beating, and then... then... my favorite couple in the whole wide world broke up (an off-screen split took place last month; an on-screen split was inevitably soon to follow). Between you and I, I quit watching The O.C. after the season premiere. Thursday would come and I would guiltriddenly chose Grey's Anatomy over The O.C.

If this news would have come last season, I would have been absolutely devastated. But this season, I'm relieved. Let's completely forget this past blip of a season, stock up on season I through season III on DVD, and toast to a fabulous show.

And by toast, I obviously mean by reminiscing about my favorite O.C. outfits.

Because every teen girl needs a collection of Chanel purses.

This cream Chanel gown is prom dress of my dreams. Since I'm no longer in high school and prom is out of the question, perhaps I can wear this to my wedding.

I will be on hiatus until Tuesday to mourn the loss of the wonderful show that was The O.C. Just kidding lovlies, I'm off to visit a friend in Dallas. I debated whether to take along my darling Macbook, but decided against it. A break might do me good... and there is a great possibility I will be logging on my friend's computer every hour or so.

Hey, GQ...

When I first spotted my brother's GQs and Details magazines laying around the house, I couldn't help but laugh. After years of him rolling his eyes at my continously growing stacks of Vogue, Lucky, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, Nylon, and anything else overflowing with fashion, he had finally succumbed to the infectious world of style mags. I was thisclose to teasing him... I even considered nicknaming him "GQ"... but then an interesting headline caught my eye: "The Return of The Yuppie."

Stemmed from an early obsession with "The Original Preppy Handbook," I'm completely fascinated with the return of the "yuppie" culture and zoomed through the article. I wasn't expecting much; this was Details we were talking about, after all. To my surprise, the article was well researched, intelligently written, and thoroughly interesting. And following that article, was another must-read. Before I knew it, I had read the magazine cover to cover and was reaching for another issue.

Over the span of two days, I read nearly a years' worth of both Details and GQ. What will I do when Christmas break is over and I can no longer snag my brother's mags? I'm debating whether I'll simply settle for the online articles (and miss out on the fabulously attractive male models) or throw my insecurity to the wind and buy the male counterparts to my fashion magazines.

Iekeliene... Strange?

I spotted Iekeliene Stange in last months' issue of Teen Vogue, but my fascination with her didn't begin until I noticed her in Marc Jacobs's latest very fabulous ad. Although my own wardrobe is more conservative than I would like to admit, I can't help but feel inspired by Iekeliene's whimsical sense of style. Known for her wacky color combinations, retro dresses, and purposefully-tacky lenseless glasses, Iekeliene conveys such a down-to-earth persona, I feel like she could be that cool girl in class that always lives, breathes, and dresses in a world of her own.

Most models aspire to be the next Kate Moss - and therefore don Kate-esque skinny trousers, tailored jackets, and extra-mini minis. Initially, I was convinced Iekeliene's over-the-top getups were created with the purpose of drawing attention in the ever-competitive sea of supermodels, but the fashion daredevil told WWD that she looks to Snow White and Minnie Mouse for style inspiration, adding "I don't really think, 'Oh, this is going to be fashion.' I just do whatever I feel like. It's kind of funny how other people start doing the same." The thing is, I believe her.

This Year, I Resolve To...

1. Read daily. And I'm not talking about InStyle. Or Lucky. Or even Vogue. Other than Elementary Spanish I, I haven't read a single book since I started college for several reasons. I am no longer interested in "chick lit." I like to think that I am too busy to sit down and read a book (I am not). I am very intimidated by the enormous school library.

2. Write daily. No explanation needed. But I will say that I think blogging has seriously therapeutic qualities. I also believe that the cyber version of window shopping can heal anything.

3. Dress up. Getting dressed up is fun; sweats are not. Maybe it's the lack of sleep or lack of closet space, but college has somehow made me forget this essential bit of knowledge. I will put more thought into my daily ensembles, because, well... it makes me happy the same way compulsively visiting The Sartorialist does.

4. Prioritize. The episode of "The Hills" where L.C. chose her scum of a boyfriend over Teen Vogue is still fresh in my mind. I need to continously remember what is important to me (writing, fashion, my post-college future) and avoid getting caught up in the "now" (in a word, frat parties).

5. Be healthy. You know, the usual. My body is a temple... eat veggies, work out, quit eating massive amounts of sugar... blah, blah, blah. I happened to catch "Supersize Me" on TV last night and it really hit a note with me. I don't abuse McDonalds, my drug of choice is dining hall sweets: buttery cookies and soft-serve ice cream, which is arguably worse than a Big Mac.

Whew, one thing I'm not lacking is ambition. In need of resolution inspiration? Fashion Week Daily has resolutions of celebrities, socialites, and other fashion folk.

I will forever remember 2006 as "the year of the skinny jeans." Seriously. I won't remember it as "the year I finally graduated high school despite the fact that I was ready to leave as soon as I started," or "the year I made the leap from small town to city," or even "the year I began my college adventure." When I think back to it, my memory will flash back to skinny jeans. Fancy that, my freshman year of college - with "the freshmen fifteen" connotations - falls during the same year only the skinniest unforgiving jeans will do.

The rise of socialites Celebrities are so 2005; socialites are elegant, refined, and perpetually well-dressed and SocialiteRank.com singlehandedly stimulated my fascination with this well-bred clique.

High fashion, low prices With Roland Mouret popping up at Gap, Victor & Rolf causing panics at H&M, and Behnaz Sarafpour, Proenza Schouler, Paul & Joe, and Luella Bartley all making waves at my beloved Target, any small town girl in the Midwest can have her piece of high fashion.

When it comes to gift giving, it really is the thought that counts. Unfortunately, sometimes that thought can wreck serious havoc on your wardrobe. What do you do when you receive a something hideo-I mean, simply not your style-sans gift receipt?

You style isn't doomed just yet. You have several options to choose from:
1) Risk a friendship (or future gifts from Grandma) by asking for the gift receipt. Of course, if the gift is that terrible, the friendship is rather doomed anyway.
2) Pawn the gift in question on a little sister, cousin, or friend. This may be tricky, as they might question your taste... and morals.
3) Try your hand at revamping the gift. With a few minor adjustments, you can create something that satisfies your stylish side, without the possibility of offending a dear friend.

You don't have to be Tara Subkoff (genius DIY-er and Imitation of Christ designer) to add your own spin to your less-than-adored gifts.
- Turn your shapeless sweater into a cardigan by slicing up the middle and finishing the edges with color-coordinating ribbons.
- Use the same method to alter a turtleneck sweater into a collar sweater jacket.
- Chop off the sleeves of a V neck sweater to create a very modern sweater vest.
- Change the neckline, fit, and color of a tee.
- Use tweezers to convert a chandelier earring into a necklace pendant.

My last advice? Put that Christmas cash to use and invest in a stylish DIY book like Sew Subversive: Down and Dirty DIY for the Fabulous Fashionista.

I Miss My Minis

During the summer months, I absolutely live in my denim skirts. I have a rather sizey collection, but in their defense, they have saved me from many "I have nothing to wear!" situations. Dress them up, dress them down, toss them over a bikini... the denim skirt is as ubiquitous as the ballet flat in my wardrobe.

After several months of banishing them to the back of my closet, Sienna's adorable ensemble reminds me just how much I miss them. Paired with a fur vest, opaque tights, and cozy boots, Sienna makes a summer staple winter weather appropriate with ease.

Not so fast. The denim mini requires more thought than, say, your everyday jeans. Wear it with black footless leggings and you risk looking like a Limited Too-loving teenybopper. Paired with heels, this skirt takes on a cheap, tarty quality (you are familiar with Pretty Women, right?). The key is to stick with dark opaque tights, choose flat boots or ballet skimmers, and balance the barely-there bottom with winter layers.

Santa was oh so good to me.

Sex and The City is appropriate for any occasion in a girls' life. Overwhelmed with homework? Decompress with a little SATC. Nowhere to go, nothing to do? SATC marathon with your girls. Feeling uninspired? SATC to the rescue.

I spotted these gems in October and fell deeply in love. They combine two of my most favorite things in the world: plaid and flats. And, if you can believe it, they are even better in person! They are so good, in fact, that I put them on the second I opened them and haven't taken them off since. They look pretty showstopping with my pjs.

When, in the future, Vanity Fair interviews me and asks me the standard interview Q "What three people, living or dead, would you invite to dinner?" Diana Vreeland will be the number one invite, without a doubt. She fascinates me and I just can't wait to dive head first into her biog.

Have a very Merry Christmas. Blast the holiday tunes, pop in a few classic movies, and spread the Christmas spirit.

I have always loved Christmas morning, pre-presents. Whether I'm nine or nineteen, I get incredibly anxious and excited and inevitably end up waking my parents up before anyone should wake up on a day of leisure. Maybe it's because I watch a ridiculous amount of Christmas movies and listen to an embarrassing amount of Christmas tunes, but I truly believe Christmas has a magical quality. No matter what you say.

If your Christmas morning is a social affair, rolling out of bed and grabbing some slippers just won't cut it. Stick with festive knits, sweater dresses, or cozy vests: aim for a look is an comfortable as it is chic.

I was in New York for four short days and fell head over heels (to the point where I'm a proud member of the "New York State of Mind" facebook group). As if I need yet another reason to adore New York City, New York Magazine created a list of over thirty reasons to love our the big shiny apple.

Because Our Daily Commute Is a Fashion Show ... as the enormous success of The Sartorialist proves, the sidewalks of New York are as visually interesting as any fashion show or red carpet.

Because of Impossibly Hip New Bands ... can you imagine how impressive a New Yorker's iPod must be?

Because of Our Prolific Socialites ... I am over celebrities; instead, I devote all of my time to reading about beloved socialites via Socialite Rank, New York Social Diary, and WWD's Eye.

Because We Like to Watch ... Creepy, yes. Fascinating, absolutely. If you've already see the episode of Grey's Anatomy (several times), why not grab the telescope and see if there is anything interesting going on in the neighborhood?

Because There’s More to Do on a Single Street Here Than There Is in Most Other Cities ... the feeling of boredom would be nonexistant in a city like this.

Toodle-oo To Trovata

Two of the three insanely attractive and equally talented boys of Trovata, the loves of my life, have announced their departure from the label. Although the news hit WWD.com days ago, pure denial stood in the way of me writing about it until now.

I feel like my favorite boy band is breaking up. They won't be making beautiful music... I mean, dresses... together anymore! Splitting due to "creative differences," two of the designers will be starting their own lable, leaving one designer to run the show at Trovata. Creative differences?! That's the oldest excuse in the book. I want dirt. Was there a love triangle? Was one of the pretty boy designers jealous of the other's fabulous hair? Did the notorious surfers brawl over a surf board?

The fact that Trovata as we know it may never be the same again justifies going on a ridiculous shopping splurge, right? Right?

I am very tempted to snag this gorgeous cream toggle coat with detachable plaid lining, their mother-of-pearl belted navy chiffon top, and their leather buttoned hooded sweater with patterned lining - just for collecting sake, of course.

Allow me to be brutally honest here: I cannot wait for the day when my December calender is overflowing with fabulous christmas get-togethers, cocktail parties, and holiday festivities. In middle school, I assumed that time would be high school. Apparently, high schoolers aren't as cool as my middle school self imagined. In high school, I figured that time would be college. Here I am on college break and I don't have a single holiday party on my agenda. What gives?

Okay I admit it... the underlying reason I'm wishing for a hopping holiday social agenda is for one reason and one reason only: party dresses. I adore dresses. The interesting thing is, I don't wear them often; this must change. One can slip on a dress and feel instantly ladylike. They can take you from class to an evening out (assuming your calender is filled with holiday parties) in an instant.

My latest dress crush is the mini mod A-line and it is oh so perfect for winter parties. Tights, flats, and a really great clutch, and voila! This indispensible little ditty can take you from brunch to holiday shopping to an evening out with a quick change of accessories. Did I mention that this is more pretty than promiscuous, despite its super short silhouette? Did I mention that it is flattering on, gasp, everyone? Did I mention that Mischa Barton adores it?

The Sale, It's Just So... Big!

Because I don't know a single person that doesn't like really big sales, take a few to look through Gap.com's "The Really Big Sale." It is indeed really big and has dozens of things I didn't know I needed.

In these winter months, I cannot find reasons not to add to my winter coat collection. Well, other than the fact that it's sixty degrees at the moment. To wear when this ridiculous warm front is finally replaced by the forecast of snow (please, Santa?), I have my eye on the swingy cropped wool jacket, cream leather utility jacket, and the sweatshirt peacoat (a sweatshirt in peacoat form is not only brilliant, but also completely wearable).

If I were a snow bunny (and after breaking my leg from an unfortunate sledding accident, I'm about as "ski bunny" as I am "playboy bunny"), I would buy this long belted puffer vest in every single color. The cozy topper goes hand-in-hand with hot cocoa. Did I mention is costs the price of about three Starbucks hot chocolates?

Good ol' Gap has a few classic mod-inspired musts that I can't get out of my mind. The drop-waist tunic tee = pure coolness. Don't even waste your time on pants with this one; just srunch on some knit tights and the look is complete. The striped boatneck cashmere sweater is so Funny Face, Audrey Hepburn would most definitely snap this up if she were to pop into her neighborhood Gap. And this black-and-cream plaid mini skirt is just screaming for a rich knit turtleneck, black tights, and skimmers. Love!

I know Christmas is still days away, but it might as well be tomorrow as excited as I am for it. I just adore every little thing about Christmas. I can spend hours looking at ornaments. I can spend days watching Christmas classics. If it were socially acceptable, I would leave my Christmas decs up year-round.

I'm already looking forward to next year when I can decorate my tree like this one, found at Azalea Online.

Why don't you... decorate your tree with pretty necklaces instead of classic ornaments? And while you're at it, toss on a few bangles and dangling earrings just for good measure. If Holly Golightly had a Christmas tree, I have a feeling this is what it looked like.

I really shouldn't be taking precious study minutes to peruse fashion dailies, but, well... a girl needs a break now and then and fashion is the ideal diversion. I have visited our campus bookstore at least seven times in the past week (and by week I mean Sunday through Tuesday) for the sole purpose of stocking up on new fashion magazines. I've been eagerly awaiting the debut of this month's Elle (Jennifer Garner!) and Harper's Bazaar (Kate Winslet! Cameron Diaz!), but both have decided to disappoint me and prolong their arrival.

Luckily I found fashion therapy in the form of N.E.E.T. Magazine, an adorable e-mag that is every bit as stylish and trendsetting as any glossy. I'm obsessed with all things related to fashion, magazines, and the internet, so how in the world have I been missing out on this little piece of stylish heaven?

It's quite appropriate that I discovered it after a long, stressful exam. Nearly as exhilarating as a brand new purse or piping hot cappuccino or... new issue of Vogue. Drop that statistics book, put down your note cards, and take a few minutes to click through this pure magalog fabulousness.

Every time I visit The Sartorialist, I can't help but imagine what it would be like to walk in the shoes (shiny Prada loafers, I'm sure) of the photog of the cultishly-cool website. Of all of the hundreds of street style sites, the sartorialist's (alter ego of Scott Schuman) is undeniably the best.

Mr. Schuman, who previously worked in fashion sales and is now a stay-at-home daddy, spends his days walking around fabulous fashion capitals taking candids of equally fabulous style setters. He has a unique eye and only photographs only the best. He is such a highly-regarded fashion photog that Style.com enlisted him to take street style photos during Fashion Week. Spend five minutes on his webby and you'll instantly be inspired to take a second look at your own wardrobe, overflowing with new ensemble ideas.

I love millions of things about the holidays... decorations, lights, trees, presents, stockings, candy cane coffee, holiday movies and, last but not least, quirky online gift guides. It seems every blog, magazine, and e-shopping source has their own unique version of wishlist and I enjoy every last one of them.

From Kate Spade's Stocking Stuffers to Fred Flare's Big Spender, I thought I had found them all. This afternoon, on a whim (and study break), I discovered azcentral.com's adorable "Holiday with Style." Whether you're shopping for your fashionista friend or bohemian sister, azcentral has plenty of ideas accompanied by adorable cartoon-y characters and online shopping suggestions.

I received plenty of gift ideas from this dandy little guide. The only problem is, they are things I want!

- The dainty silver owl necklace from Girlshop is sweet, hip, and the name - "Mr. Hoo Hoo" - is absolutely irresistible.
- Philosophy's holiday confection lipglosses sound good enough to eat. Flavored of delicacies like chocolate milk and ginger ale, these are bound to look as great as they taste!
- I am passionate about DIY, but my sewing skills aren't quite up to par. Perhaps Built by Wendy designer Wendy Mullin's "Sew U" guide could help me out.
- My beloved Macbook Pro deserves an equally-chic computer case and this cool patterned jade style fits the bill perfectly.
- I can't get enough of rugby stripe scarves, and this quirky snake touch makes it funky.

Vick-Vick's Secret

Last night I had my very first "Victoria Secret Fashion Show" experience. Although I was a little apprehensive at first (I'm crazy for fashion shows, but lingerie shows? Not so much.), the promise of Justin Timberlake performing "My Love" ultimately convinced me.

As it turns out, I couldn't believe how fast that hour went by... and not just because I knew I had spanish homework awaiting my attention. The show was incredibly entertaining. The backstage scene was exciting, the JT performance rocked, and that six million dollar 800 carat diamond bra? Unbelieveable!

The fashion show, particularly the PINK collection set, inspired me to check out Vickie's latest goods. I don't prance around in lingerie, but I do adore the rugby stripe-filled collegiate loungewear and undies. Here are some of my favorite picks (note to christmas shoppers: VS has tons of fabby stocking stuffers in the form of panties, Ts, and girlie boxers).

Cropped striped leggings... so-oo-oo-oo cute in green and navy.
Doe-adorned sweats... don't eat Bambi, wear her!
Ribbon drawstring boxers... extra short, extra adorable.
Rocker sweats... although I don't listen to The Who or Led Zeppelin, I like these rock-and-roll sweats.
Rugby stripe V neck... I can't get enough rugby stripes and this sweater is no exception.
Pink fur-lined booties... a perfect way to keep my tootsies warm at the dorm.

Closet Writer

Having too many clothes and not just enough closet space is a common problem... especially for those of us who would rather shop than eat. Although I can sympathize with this problem, I had never been able to relate to it because my parents knew me well enough to build a nice, spacious walk-in closet ("Would you rather have a sizey bedroom or roomy closet, Casey?" "The closet, of course!"). I was a lucky girl... emphasis on "was."

My dorm room, bless its heart, does not have a closet. At all. Instead, I keep my clothes in an armoire. Armoires are nice, of course, but they are not a proper replacements for closets. Where does the university suggest I keep my shoes? On a shelf?

Turns out, the armoire is good for something. Our campus-led city newspaper, The Missourian, decided to do a feature on me, my writing adventures, and my beloved Teenfashionista.com. So where does the armoire come in? I sat in it for the accompanying picture! Fun, right? I'll never look at that armoire the same again.

I have already confessed my adoration for charm bracelets, and though I usual prefer dainty varieties, the Juicy charms manage to be gaudy... but in a interestingly cool way. I personally adore the Leo charm. Sure, the Cancer charm's embossed, rhinestone-adorned crab is cute, but the Leo's crazy, over-the-top enamel lion head with a glamorous rhinestone crown is so cool, I almost wish I had been born a month later.

The North Face of the Mountion

I understand the idea of designer status symbols. Well, I don't "understand" it per se, but I do "get it." The Chanel purse, iconic. The Burberry scarf, classic. The Hermes belt, timeless. The North Face jacket... huh?

On my campus, similar to campuses across America, The North Face is the outerwear of choice and I just don't understand it. This is a glorified fleece colorblock jacket (often costing upwards of $100) we're talking about here. And it's not even cute. I adore coats and I cannot figure out why a girl would forgo pretty winter coats in favor of a simple fleece. Pea coats toggle coats, puffy coats, fur-trimmed coats... what is winter without a fabulous topper?

Over the weekend, we had a massive snowstorm. While I was bundled up from head to toe (Pea coat, check. Scarf, check. Earmuffs, check.), I saw more girls than you would believe waltzing around in a thin North Face. I live in the heart of the Midwest; fleece simply does not cut it as a winter coat unless you like to have your upper body to freeze in five seconds flat. I have heard girls make the argument that North Face specializes in skiing gear, so "of course!" the jackets keep you warm. You know what? I don't believe it for a second. I know how [not] warm fleeces are and I just can't see how a tiny embroidered logo could make it that much cozier.

So not only are students dropping hundreds of dollars for a fleece, but they're freezing for the sake of... coolness? I would love opinions on this, because I'm absolutely perplexed.

Note to self:

What am I doing on December 12th? Well, aside from studying my toosh off for exams, I'll be tuning into Barbara Walter's Ten Most Fascinating People of 2006 of course! Barbara Walters herself is quite fascinating and an hour dedicated to her interviewing fascinating people is just too fascinating to pass up.

So who's on this year's list? Several people that fascinate me very little (Andre Agassi? Televangelist Joel Osteen?)... a few that fascinate to me mildly (Jay-Z, McDreamy)... and one woman who fascinates me so much that I wouldn't miss this special even if one of my muy importante finals took place at the same time: Ms. Anna Wintour.

I have never seen an interview with la Wintour and I can hardly wait. Do you think she'll discuss her personal life? The Devil Wears Prada? Her unbelievable ability to make or break young, fledgling designers' careers? Only time will tell. How will I ever be able to wait nine whole days? Ugh!

A Very Merry Christmas Wishlist

As if I wasn't already in the holiday spirit, yesterday's snow day really pushed me over the edge. I woke up to sixteen whopping inches of snow and an e-mail from the college dean announcing that classes were canceled - onfly the third time in 33 years at my school. We spent the day drinking hot chocolate, sledding around campus, and watching Christmas classics... now I am so ready for Santa to come.

I spent the time that I would have been doing homework under normal circumstances working on my annual Christmas list. As a college student, I know I need lots of things... I just can't seem to think of them. More clothes? No room in my armoire! More shoes? I have shoes covering my dorm room floor! More cds? I download all of my music - legally, I might add - via music blogs. What's a girl to ask for?

• Sex and the City, for starters, is a necessity for any college girl. It's one of the few shows that immediately improves your mood, doesn't require all of your attention, and can give you a good laugh - even if you're doing homework.

• I'm not into dangling earrings of any sort: hoops, chandeliers, drops... if they aren't studs, I won't have anything to do with them. Day in and day out, I wear pearls. I adore my pearls, I do, but sometimes one just needs a little variety. That's where silver studs or button earrings come in. Silver studs are classic, but buttons have a nice vintage vibe that I can't get enough of.

• While I don't necessarily need another pair of shoes -- or flats, for that matter -- I have an enormous crush on these cherry red tarten plaid flats. I saw them in person months ago and fell in love right there and then. Since then, I haven't been able to get them out of my mind. I love tarten plaid (My grandfather was Scottish, after all), I love ballet flats, so clearly, I'm head over heels for these. Hey Santa Claus, I wear a size nine.

• Books about Jackie O., Marie Antoinette, Diana Vreeland, and fashion history in general. Just another means of procrastinating... but at least in this case, I'm reading something historical and fashionable.

Other than that? I just want to be home for Christmas Break! I can't wait to be with my family, in my home, with our Christmas decorations, traditions, and movies. And peppermint stick coffee. Mmmm.

Starlet Slash Designer... Redux

Both vie for the spot of the "Brit Beauty." Both prefer hipster threads, ballet flats, and bohemian accessories. Both love dysfunctional men (oops, was that too harsh?).

And last but certainly not least, as of today, both will be designing collections. Kate Moss announced her plans to dabble in fashion several weeks ago, and now - always keeping up with The Jones... or Ms. Jones, in this case - Sienna will, too, be trying her hand at designing.

According to WWD.com:

Sienna Miller has turned from fashion plate to fashion designer. The actress has teamed up with her designer-sister Savannah Miller to create an 80-piece ready-to-wear line, called Twenty8Twelve by s.miller, which will launch for fall 2007.

The duo's first collection includes denim, knitwear, tailored jackets, dresses and outerwear, and the sisters said their inspirations ran from Dickensian London to Patti Smith and Beat poetry. In another artsy touch, each season the line will sponsor an artist.

Savannah, Sienna's little sis, is actually a fashion designer in her own right. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, she has designed for Anya Hindmarch and is currently working on her own knitwear collection. With Savannah's fashion skills and Sienna's stellar style, this might be a duo made in fashion heaven. Sorry, Kate.

Weather Outside Is Frightful

The local weather report, according to weather.com:

Rain is expected to change over to freezing rain and sleet this evening and continue into tomorrow. The icy mix will change over to all snow by tomorrow evening and continue into Thursday night. The snow will be heavy at times with gusty North winds. Ice accumulations of around a quarter inch is possible by tomorrow evening... with total snowfall amounts of 8 to 12 inches possible by Friday morning.

In the spirit of this exciting forecast, I thought it would be appropriate to spend a minute on the latest Ugg boots that make me continue to love them despite their utter "uggliness." I have a complete crush on the "Classic Mini." They are like an adorable, miniture version of the standard Ugg. And the floral embroidered "Wahine?" Perfect for the California girls who insist on wearing their Uggs year round. As far as moccasins go, I love the tiebow driving moc in the bright, jade green. So untraditionally Uggy.

Too bad I can't overnight-ship a pair for tomorrow's colossal winter storm... walking to class sure will be interesting.

Are You Juicy?

How does something that feels so good look so bad?

I'm referring to sweats, obviously. You wake up one morning... it's raining... you're sleepy... and grab the sweats. You wear them and you notice how many fellow students wear them. You begin to think, "Hey, everyone's doing it! Why shouldn't I?" So the next morning, instead of putting together a quick cardigan + tunic top + skinny jean ensemble, you grab the cozy sweats. Before you know it, your jeans are pushed to the back of the closet, neglected and dusty.

Don't let yourself turn into a sweatpant-wearing slacker, but for those mornings when zipping and buttoning up jeans is just too much to ask, the Juicys have come to our rescue with luxuriously cool cashmere sweats.
